Working in Public

One of the hardest things as a tenure-track faculty member is to keep all the things you are doing moving forward. For me, one of the things that has fallen by the wayside is most social media, including this blog. Part of it falling away is because I’ve been focusing on my tenure and promotion case but it is also that I want to ensure what I’m putting out there has value to those around me.

So, for the past couple of years, I’ve been focusing on concrete products—articles, digital products, and even conferences that can focus my efforts on things that my colleagues can use. For 2019-2020, I’ll be focusing on the following:

  • Discover Indiana: Working with my colleague Rebecca Shrum and our project manager Nancy Yerian, we are supporting an Indiana state-wide project bringing digital history and cultural heritage tours to the public
  • DH2020: In partnership with the incredible Laura Estill, I’m co-chairing the program committee for the international DH conference. I’ll be posting over there about a myriad of issues including open peer review.
  • teaching a 4-4 course load: I decided that I really need a full year of sabbatical (2020-2021) to work on my next project so I’m teaching an overload to ensure that I can take time away without my department feeling the pain.
  • developing better online teaching skills: I’m part of a cohort of scholars at IUPUI completing ACUE’s Effective Teaching Practice year long training so I’m spending 3-5 hours per week for the year learning about new teaching pedagogy.
  • wrapping up an existing teaching grant to move my digital humanities course online.
  • and writing, writing, writing: two books are being finished as is an article on digital sport history.

As you can see, that’s alot. So if you want to find out more, I encourage you to find me on twitter or just email. Otherwise, I’m usually in my office working.

  74. Balancing a 4-4 teaching load with co-chairing DH2020 and finishing two books sounds exhausting, but the sabbatical strategy makes sense. I appreciate the emphasis on concrete products that colleagues can actually use.

  75. It’s striking how openly she frames the trade-offs of a tenure-track workload, especially the decision to teach an overloaded 4-4 load in order to earn a full sabbatical year. The shift toward concrete, shareable outputs like Discover Indiana, DH2020, and open peer review makes her step back from most social media feel less like disengagement and more like a deliberate reallocation of effort.
